But despite the coalition\u2019s request for an emergency meeting by March 13, Minister of Health Sylvia Jones and Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Michael Tibollo have not responded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The groups are speaking out to secure emergency funding and\u00a0prevent impending closures of sites in Sudbury and Timmins. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/odprn.ca\/occ-opioid-and-suspect-drug-related-death-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">500 people<\/a> have died from drug poisoning in Ontario so far this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI am horrified. This is a life-and-death emergency, and we are being ignored,\u201d says Rev. George Bozanich of the Windsor CTS Advocacy Coalition. \u201cWithout these services, Ontarians die.&nbsp; These are our children, parents, siblings and neighbours. I cannot imagine the Ministers and the Premier ignoring a similar lifesaving request on any other issue.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the current provincial government came to power in 2018, unregulated drug deaths have surged. <strong>\u201cToxic drugs killed <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/odprn.ca\/occ-opioid-and-suspect-drug-related-death-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>nine people<\/strong><\/a><strong> every day in the first two months of this year,\u201d says Beeta Senedjani of the Canadian Drug Policy Coalition. \u201cThe dead would fill every seat on at least eleven school buses. This is an emergency. The province needs to start acting like it.\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supervised consumption sites are a proven health intervention where trained staff respond to overdose emergencies and offer supports and connections to health and social services. Evidence consistently shows <a href=\"https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/supervised-consumption-sites\/#a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the sites save lives<\/a> and significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/harmreductionjournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12954-022-00609-5#:~:text=Presently%2C%2098%25%20of%20overdoses%20are,calls%20and%20emergency%20department%20visits.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce emergency calls and hospital visits.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe province\u2019s actions have put municipal governments, local health boards and even the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/sudbury\/anonymous-donations-supervised-consumption-site-1.7091260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>public<\/strong><\/a><strong> in the impossible position of having to either foot the bill for a provincial responsibility or watch their communities suffer,\u201d says Matthew Shoemaker, Mayor of Sault Ste. Marie. \u201cThis crisis is a foremost challenge for municipalities, who don\u2019t have the resources or the mandate to fund health care. We badly need stable support and action from the Government of Ontario and we need it now.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe entire years-long process has been an irresponsible use of public funds,\u201d says Michael Brennan of Pozitive Pathways in Windsor, whose site was forced to close in December. \u201cSupervised consumption sites are a proven lifesaving intervention that reduce costs and burdens across our public systems, on police, paramedics and emergency departments. We have complied with every requirement. &nbsp;We cannot wait any longer.\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last fall, the Province of Ontario put all supervised consumption site applications on indefinite hold pending a&nbsp;critical incident review for one site in Toronto. The decision came after a bystander was tragically killed in the vicinity of a Toronto site last summer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cA lengthy review of a tragic, isolated incident is preventing desperate communities across the province from implementing lifesaving services amidst a public health emergency,\u201d says Michael Parkinson of the Drug Strategy Network of Ontario. \u201cCritical incidents occur frequently in other settings, such as hospitals. But they never result in freezing funding or site approvals.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simcoemuskokahealth.org\/topics\/drugs\/opioids\/Consumption-and-treatment-services#1e5fa391-786d-461c-876a-1647343bf504#05fc9768-3f31-49b2-a41a-b743f52d2a10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">communities<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/wecoss.ca\/consumption-and-treatment-site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waited<\/a> for approval since long before the review. <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9142457\/barrie-supervised-consumption-site-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barrie<\/a> and Sudbury applied over two years ago. Citing the province\u2019s pause, a Hamilton application was withdrawn after two years. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/sudbury\/safe-drug-consumption-site-sudbury-timmins-sault-ste-marie-northern-ontario-1.7063533\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sault Ste Marie<\/a>, a site application is instead being directed to the federal government. Windsor\u2019s only site <a href=\"https:\/\/windsor.ctvnews.ca\/safepoint-pause-erodes-trust-with-drug-users-expert-fears-1.6744183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shut its doors<\/a> at the end of December after waiting over a year. Without immediate provincial funding, sites in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/sudbury\/the-spot-opioid-crisis-toxic-drug-supply-1.7124121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudbury<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/sudbury\/timmins-consumption-site-hospital-funding-1.7071003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Timmins<\/a> will close in two weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhen I think about losing Safe Health Site Timmins, I am afraid for our community,\u201d says Jason Sereda of DIY Community Health in Timmins. \u201cWe are running out of time.\u201d <\/strong>Premier Doug Ford has said the review results will be released this month, too late for those who have already died of drug poisoning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The open <a href=\"https:\/\/drugpolicy.ca\/supervised-consumption-services-site-closures-due-to-lack-of-funding-from-ministry-of-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">l<\/a>etter calls for the elimination of unnecessary barriers and immediate sustained provincial funding for supervised consumption sites, including inhalation services, to meet the urgent needs of communities. The coalition emphasizes that these demands require immediate provincial action to prevent further loss of life and harm to communities across Ontario.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMinister Jones, please listen to us. This is an emergency,\u201d says Amber Fritz of R\u00e9seau ACCESS Network in Sudbury. \u201cWe need your leadership. You have a choice: you have the opportunity to save lives and costs to the system, or you can continue to do nothing.
